Building a Terrarium

Wednesday evening I taught a terrarium class at the shop.  We all agreed it felt good to play in the dirt once again.

April 24, Green tip of the day- A LITTLE RAY OF SUNSHINE
Turning the rays of sun landing on your roof into energy is one of the most effective ways of generating your own renewable energy.  Solar power can be used to heat hot water or to convert heat into electricity.
Even in the UK-not known as the sunniest nation-90,000 solar water heaters have been installed  (this book was written in 2010).  Heating water takes a lot of electricity, but these systems plug your household's plumbing into the sun's heat for carbon-free hot water.  Solar energy can provide half of your water heating needs even in overcast weather!

Green Tip of Day-  Buy Local
It's a no-brainer that locally grown food has spent less time in transit and storage, where flavor and nutrition start to fade.  Did you know that air-freighted food can make the CO2 emissions from your shopping cart exceed that of your car and home combined?
The best transport is from your garden to your door, but if that's not an option buying from the farmer is the next best.  Farmers Markets and Food Co-ops like the Purple Porch.

As you know it's not just the food stores you should frequent...by shopping local you support the small businesses in your area.  They are the quaint shops like ours that keep the money in our area.

***Tonight is our Terrarium class!  We've got 2 more great classes coming your way and will be announced as soon as we alert the Craft Club members they will be open to the public.  Stay tuned!

Chinoiserie

Here are just a few pictures from First Friday.  Thank you to all who came,  it was a great crowd.  The Asian theme was such a hit,  we will be restocking the store next week!

The pro's Tina & Suzi from X Pose photo's came and shot lots of pictures, so I'll be sure to share as soon as they arrive.

Our very special guest artist Hiromi Winderquist of Harujion Design made some beautiful handbags with fabrics from Japan.  You have to see them to really appreciate all the hand work that goes into them (hand beaded and embroidered).  The fabrics are reproductions of vintage kimono fabrics.
Hiromi invited some of her friends to wear their heirloom kimono's.  They are passed down from their mother's and treasured.  This one was a beautiful silk.  If the weather would have been rainy she would not have chanced ruining this heirloom.
I love hearing the stories from their homeland and so appreciate every little detail that goes into everything they do.

The shoppers

Children's table and chair set.  The chairs are retro and I designed the table to go with them.  The corners had holes so I made stash bags for crayons, markers etc, easily gathered up with a bead.
Baby cradle set, and Hiromi's paper balloon mobile.
WABI SABI Saturday,  April 14th.  Paper Crane Class with Hiromi will take place at junk Evolution next Saturday.  Please call for reservations  574-215-7812.

NewHomes Magazine

I've been holding this in for so long, and can finally breath this exciting news....  NewHomes magazine, a bimonthly publication has asked us to write for them!   Every month we'll be giving out a few of our inner-most thoughts on interior design, home decor and green tips.  We are also working closely with the Habitat Re-Store,  they let us know what they have lots of, and we think of creative ways to use the items and offer classes on repurposing.  Plus they have a 20% off coupon in the magazine for the Re-Store.

The Re-Store has lots of brass chandelier's and we are hosting a class on October 7th at 6:30 PM on how to update them.  The class is $12.00 per person, and advanced reservations are required.
There's still room!  Here is our contact information:
