Our Big News

At junk Evolution we absolutely love what we do, but after 3 years of just making it and a pile of hospital bills it made me wonder if I shouldn't give it up for a regular job with benefits to help contribute more to our household.  I spoke to Linda regarding my feelings and she also said that she and Bernie could not go on living on what we make.  So we decided to hang in there until the year’s end and start the process of unloading all our loot.
When I shared this with my financial advisor (my father), his answer to our closing was this, " You are at the age where you should be doing what you love not working for someone else just for the money."  He was right.
So with that in mind I started brainstorming about what it would take to make it work for all of us....if only we could charge all the customers who tell us they just come in for ideas.  We'd be rich!   What we really need is space for more inventory.  We got our heads together with Kathy from CircaArts and Gary, (our partner Carpenter Gothic) and decided to kind of merge the two shops.  We will be cutting a door between the two shops in January while we are closed.  Gary will be moving his items next door which will give junk Evolution the entire store.  Kathy is taking her shop in a new direction concentrating on artists related to the Arts and Crafts style that Kathy loves and expanding her card line and Ziggurat Tiles.  We are so excited to be merging, there are just so many positives by doing it this way.
Our last day this year will be December 28th.  We won't be participating in January's First Friday to give us more time for the remodeling.  We will reopen with our French Circus theme February 7th First Friday at 5:00.  That should give us plenty of time to overhaul the shop and fill it with new inventory.  We are thrilled to have the chance to be part of all the exciting changes taking place in the East Bank Village, and DTSB.    What you can do to help is to spread the word that we are here.  Our faithful customers can only buy so much furniture etc so we have to rely on new blood.  Tell everyone!!!! And thank you so much for your loyal support for the past three years. Here's to the next chapter...Cheers!

Washi Tape Class

Our friend Hiromi agreed to do a teaching demonstration on the many uses of Washi Tape.  It's a paper craft tape that we're in love with.  There are lots of "fake" tapes out there so to make certain we had the real deal we had her buy some for us while visiting her family last summer in Japan because that's where the real deal comes from!   She choose a variety of beautiful patterns and solids in different sizes.   We just brought them out to sell and wanted to give you some fun idea's to do with the tapes.  It's just in time for making gifts to give this Christmas.
Class size is limited so make your reservations to attend now!

Do you remember these flowers on our wall last summer?

LEDGES OF THE FALL

Is there any place better this time of year to see the colors and taste the season?  We think not, and it's cause for celebration hence the holiday "Thanksgiving".   We'll have all the items you'll need for this celebration.   At junk Evolution we don't rush the season or the holidays, we enjoy each one as they come.  With that in mind you won't find any Christmas decor until the week before Thanksgiving.  We strive for living a grand simple life and enjoy the seasons to its fullest.

Who doesn't like to hunker down in a cabin with a roaring fire in the fireplace, under a wool throw with a classic book?   It's time to bring some warm and cozy elements into your home for the season....make friends and family want to linger,  enjoy a feast, or just have some old fashioned fun with board games.
Come to junk Evolution Friday November 1st from 5-9 pm for a taste of the season.  We'll be serving hot apple cider (we foraged the apples ourselves!) The South Bend chapter of Tri Kappa will be selling their cheese spread on First Friday, and will be serving it as our snack. Stock up now for the holidays. 10 oz container for 5.00. Gluten and nut free.
We had our friend Hiromi pick up some Washi tape while in Japan last summer.  It's a wonderful craft tape and adds a personalization to accessories etc.  We'll have it for sale in November.  I wrap kids gifts in comics and its a perfect tape to match, and decorate the package with and it's biodegradable!  The possibilities for Washi tape are endless.  We are also planning some classes with Hiromi on how to use this, so stay tuned!

The next warehouse Day is November 16th

Eat Wild Potluck

As business owners, we try to find a happy balance between work and play but when you love what you do it oftentimes overlaps.  Some customers who have become friends, suggested that we host a dinner for a group of local Foragers.  (Something near and dear to my heart...it actually goes beyond organic gardening.  It's using what's already there and eating off the land like our forefathers, hunting and gathering).  So of course we said yes.  Willow actually said we were perfect because we hunted and gathered for a living! I had talked to Suzi and Tina of A Love Worth Telling or I should say they approached me a few years ago about hosting a harvest feast,  so I agreed as long as they could be a part of the evening.  They took the beautiful photographs below.

The food was incredible to say the least.  It was like going to your favorite restaraunt and not having to worry about any chemicals or additives and getting the freshest ingredients.  I don't think anyone even touched the salt or pepper because everything was perfectly seasoned.  It was really that good!  We met so many talented and interesting people and hope to plan some events for the spring time.

junk Evolution set the stage and brought in enough tables and chairs for 20, set the tables and foraged for the drinks.  Wild herb teas (mint and bee balm) and fresh apple cider.  We found an apple tree at the Humane Society that needed to be picked and took the apples to our local Cider Mill.
