I'm back! I guess you can say that a great vacation lasts a lifetime because of all the wonderful memories. And a picture is worth a thousand words barely cuts it. I'm no photographer but I do love to snap my camera every chance I get. However these pic's don't even do Hawaii justice. It truly is a magical place, and I know my son is where he belongs right now.

I've always been a back roads kind of person and I prefer old Hawaii to the new shiny destination resorts. One of our favorite activities was whale watching. They migrate from Alaska to Hawaii in the winter months, and just sitting on the beach or driving along the highways you can see them.

Some of our customers ask to see our homes and how we decorate for the holidays. In my home it's very simple, but I pay lots of attention to the tiny details. I always hope to draw people in for a closer look. With a theme in mine, I rummage through my boxes and choose from what I already have, then add lots of natural elements from my yard.

My outside is decorated merry and fun with large vintage colored lights and colorful elements, so I wanted the inside to be quiet the opposite (always a mix for me!)

When my kids were little we made these bark houses, one for each child. We had so much fun
and by bringing these out every few years hopefully brings back happy memories of time spent together.

Stockings I made from my great, great grandmother's quilt, that had seen better days.

I enjoyed my branch tree so much last year that we repeated the process. It's a Charlie Brown tree but the ornaments show, and the savings from not buying a tree will go to a charity.

Not one red cent was spent on the wrappings. The paper gift bags were saved from gifts we received last year.

Burlap, comics, and fabric gift saks are my green wrappings. Once you make a commitment to not buy the wrappings you will be more aware of what you can re-use. I can sew a bag quicker than wrapping a gift, and it can be used for years to come. We also sell them at the shop.

One of our customers told me about something she does at Christmas. You know how Ellen DeGeneres has the 12 days of giving? Well, Lori cleans our a different room, closet, cabinet every day and fills a bag to give or donate. Is that brilliant or what! I probably sound like a broken record sometimes but my feelings are deep rooted and it's my mantra to always use what you have available to you. Usually it's applied to supplies in our art/decorating but as I've mentioned before we've been blessed by so many awesome customers that I try to utilize their talents as well. Sometimes they end up as my inspiration for themes as they were once again for First Friday, "Dancing into December."

Maggie and Maureen are two sustainable chicks that live the green life...shop local, ride bikes, recycle etc We got to know them from their patronage to our shop, and in a conversation one day I learned from Maggie that she's been taking Ball room dancing lessons for 10 years and so the story goes the gals and their husbands were our live entertainment from 5 until 9. They literally rocked our world and all our customers, people passing by...

Happy December 1st! We all know the race is on to find the perfect gift for our favorite people. We were invited to decorate a tree for the Center for History again this year. We used the paper flowers that Christine will be teaching the class for next Tuesday at 6:00, and some other recycled items of course! The museum is a great cold day get away for a fun family activity.

Have you ever wondered why so many beautiful buildings are adorned by some mighty scary looking creatures? I have a thing for architecture and could spend a whole day just looking at the outside of this home. Any guesses who lived here? Yes, it was one family with one child!

The term originates from the French gargouille, which in English literally means "throat" or otherwise known as the "gullet";^[2] cf. Latin gurgulio, gula, gargula ("gullet" or "throat") and similar words derived from the root gar, "to swallow", which represented the gurgling sound of water (e.g., Spanish garganta, "throat"; Spanish gárgola, "gargoyle"). It is also connected to the French verb gargariser, which means "to gargle."^[3] The Italian word for gargoyle is doccione or gronda sporgente, an architecturally precise phrase which means "protruding gutter." The Germanword for gargoyle is Wasserspeier, which means "water spewer." The Dutch word for gargoyle is waterspuwer, which means "water spitter" or "water vomiter." A building that has gargoyles on it is "gargoyled."

A grotesque figure, also known as gargoyle is a sculpture that does not work as a waterspout and serves only an ornamental or artistic function,^[2] although the field of architecture usually preserves the distinction between gargoyles (functional waterspouts) and non-waterspout grotesques.

Gargoyles are said to scare off and protect from any evil or harmful spirits.

One of our favorite regulars works at the Old National Bank in the Eddy Street Commons and invited us to be the Business of the Month. So we got busy pulling things for our favorite holiday "Thanksgiving". If you happen to be in the neighborhood stop by and say hello to Pam.

Myles Robertson

Myles is studying sustainability at IUSB and lives in the new housing on campus. He was also hired by the school to try and make it greener. Myles came up with a great idea for junk evolution and put us up to the challenge of revamping his room to make it more functional. He's also inviting his classmates and the school newspaper, and the South Bend Tribune in to spread the word about junk evolution.

This is what we started with (the rooms are furnished with your basic bed, desk and dresser).

So this is what we did....

Bernie made a hall tree from a tree for our favorite tree hugger, Linda added castors to the bottom of the crates for under the bed storage, and Char made him a comforter quilt using his old favorite t'shirts.

The headboard was constructed from castoffs and is a functional memo board. With the tall ceilings and boring cream walls we needed to add some height. One of Myles favorite activities is Ultimate Frisbee so Bernie made him a clock, and the lamp is fashioned from dictionary's and the table is a album titled "Around the World in 80 days". (Myles loves to travel).

On the top of his desk we added some plants (he's also a gardener) and some rocks fashioned into picture holders....more elements from nature.

The mirror is embellished with squares cut from colorful pop cans.

The pillow is made from a sweater.

Myles made the comment that most of the students just run to their favorite big box store and buy all the items (probably made in another country). So the rooms all end up kind of looking the same. We really wanted to made a statement about Myles and incorporated elements that he enjoys.

So as you can see, it doesn't take that much to really personalize the space....just some castoffs and a vivid imagination!

Autumn in Northern Indiana, it's right up there with the best beaches, and most majestic mountain range, and I should know having lived in some pretty fantastic places. The seasons ( and family) are what brought me back home again.

This time of the year we take the time to enjoy what little color and sunshine is left to us with longer rides in the car, or maybe a trip to find the best tastes of the season in the apple orchards, and winery's. It feels good to put on our flannel shirts and wool jackets and planning a fun weekend of leisure.

I've always been a back roads kinda girl and always take the longer route home just for a glimpse of certain things that just kind of "do it for me". That feeling of awe, it keeps us coming back time and time again. I'm a simple person, it really doesn't take much. Here are a few of my favorite things.

It's the little things...

Who knows why we are draw to the things we love; old books, colored glass, little boxes... but if you do collect the best way to display your items are in groupings. It makes the greatest impact.

I think I am drawn to hand turned candle holders because my grandpa used to make them for us on his lathe, so whenever I see one I have to buy it. Collecting old things connects us with our ancestry. It also tells the story of who we are and where we've been. They make a house a home.

Brown jugs remind me of the old root beer stands of days gone by, and vintage bar ware of our favorite fried chicken restaraunt in Michigan.

What evokes a memory for you?

We also like to adorn ourselves with embellishments. This dear friend is one person I love to make jewelry for because she likes one of a kind, unique things and can always pull them off. ( Next time Dee look at the camera and flash us your beautiful smile :)

Hmmm we all tend to think some things are just bigger than they really are. I've found that with women, it's the size of their cars.

We want something so bad we want to squeeze it into our homes, but first it has to squeeze into our cars.

Rachel and I came up with a creative way for her to get this table home, and she was glad to report that it made it home beautifully and fit perfectly into her space.

Band-Aids and tongue depressor jars make great vases for someone who is
under the weather.

Random thoughts

My daughter Rose used to always tell me that I'm so random, and now I think I'm starting to see what she's talking about! If you would follow me around for a day or maybe even an hour, you would understand also. It's just the way my brain works.

Anyways I thought I would share some things that we (junk evolution) find exciting. Starting with this photo of Myles striking a pose. He's one of our new favorite peeps. He's going to IUSB for environmental studies, and was hired by the school to help reduce waste, and make the school greener. We are working with him on a fun project and I'll tell you more about that later.

This is my version of a black and tan! I just finished this piece that has many functions...flat screen tv stand, storage at the end of a queen or king sized bed, mud room storage (topped with a cushion for seating).

Me, coming home from a garage sale with not one, but 2 wedding dresses! You'll see what I do with this ruffle next February-when we celebrate our ancestry and France vs England oh la la!

In my perfect world, every house would have a clothes line. Why? Because it's green. You save energy, it whitens the whites and on a windy day it practically iron's the clothes for you. I savor days like these and miss them when they're gone.

Our friend Hiromi went to her homeland this summer (Japan) and brought Linda and I these socks.

They're perfect for flip flops and so comfy.

Such a sad quiet weekend reflecting on 9-11.

I always say out of bad comes good.

I'm so proud to come from a country that is like super glue in times of turmoil. We don't give up until the last stone is unturned, and we find the strength to go on in the face of unbearable sadness.

We lost so many yet life long relationships were made.

We will never ever forget.

When it comes to decorating, you don't need to re-do your rooms every season, but it is nice to bring out some festive colors. Rotate your stock, so to speak. I just told my friend that I love my house in the fall because of my color scheme, it's in all it's glory, but for other season's I add elements to lighten the heaviness.

Amber glass for fall, it's a given.

We have some close friends in the real-estate business who will often give out our name when their clients are in a bind . This is the kind of stuff we love (the stuff no body else knows what to do with!) The kind of stuff that gets the creative juices flowing.

After a trip to Goodwill (taking all the things we didn't want) we were loaded to the brim (do I hear banjo music?) and ended up renting a large storage unit just to store it. We also probably saved it from going straight away to a land fill.

We do accept donations, and occasionally we buy, but we love the thrill of the hunt.

When in doubt, make a fool of yourself. There is a microscopically thin line between being brilliantly creative and acting like the most gigantic idiot on earth. So what the hell, leap.

Green Thursday on Exercise.

I haven't posted a "Green Living" post in quite a while and would like to do it on exercise! It doesn't have to be grueling it can be fun and enjoyable. Or you can use peddle power to run your errands and get a two-for. I live right in town and always try to walk or ride my bike, you save fossil fuel and get your exercise. Instead of going out to lunch with an old friend we meet and go for a walk. It's a great time to catch up. Try to add some kind of fun to your day in the form of exercise and you won't even realize that you are getting in shape.

We have a wonderful brand span-kin new "Pumpkin Vine Trail" (it used to be the railroad) that runs from here to Goshen all the way to Shipshewanna, and it's the most beautiful, peaceful way to start your day. No traffic, no bad fumes from cars, no noise (except the birds singing) or the singing coming from an Amish church on a Sunday. It's truly wonderful. Ed and I ride on Sundays to Shipshe and back in the dappled sunshine. It' nice and cool on the path that's canopied by trees.

I feel so fortunate to have this trail in town and can't wait to see the changing seasons along this path. With any luck we'll have some snow this winter and it will be a great place to go cross country skiing!

Steampunk (our version)

You know how some people love to run because of the endorphin high they get? Well I guess you could say that's how I feel when I make a transformation, and I'm loving this months theme "Steampunk" because it's so artsy. I think this is some of our best stuff ever, truly I do!

Even if your home is traditional don't be afraid to add a little touch of industrial to the mix. It creates interest and makes it feel sophisticated and comfortable, not to stuffy. To much of any one thing is not good in my designs but I do love a good mix. So here is a preview of the store for August.

Fun with Trash

I saw this idea made with wine bottles and couldn't wait to empty enough so I dug in our own recycling trash can and pulled out some Fat Tire beer bottles (I do love the labels) and the beer is our favorite too. Ed used to live in the town where it's made, so we took a tour last summer while visiting Ft. Collins, CO. It's absolutely hands down one of the coolest, greenest places in the US and everyone was happy to be working there. They have yoga night, volleyball night etc... They give all the employee's a bike after 2 years of work, and a trip to Belgium after so many years. Even the artwork was fun and recycled. So this is in honor of New Belgium Brewery!

Organizing Fashion Accessories 101

I'm all about making it easy to get dressed, everything is in site and easy to access. No fancy jewelry box for this gal~just give me a box of nails and a utility box meant for the work room.

Granted I was blessed with amp el closet space and storage for an older home (2 of the bedrooms have 2 closets each). This is the smallest closet, but it's all mine, Ed refers to it as "Char's Boutique."

Silver dishes for earrings and necklaces, boxes for pins and bracelets.

A grappler hook for fishing makes a great place for belts.

A full length mirror is a must.

If you don't have a space like this, create one above a dresser in your bedroom. Junk evolution sells some unique items that look nice enough to create a display with. Remember if it's hidden away, you probably won't use it~out of site out of mind.

It was the week before First Friday when all chaos happens. My son Jeramiah was leaving for Hawaii and I was about l mile from my exit to the South Bend airport when he pleading looked at me and asked if I would take him to Chicago O'Hare airport instead. He was worried about making his connections. He apologized for not planning better.

I have to tell you, I have this thing about driving in Chicago, I just don't do it. Jeramiah is a wonderful navigator and traveling companion, with him I could get there but how in the world would I find my way back?

I drove by the exit, I needed the challenge but more importantly it gave me 2 more precious hours with my son. With his great directions I made it home without a hitch. (So who's up for Chicago?!)

Sometimes the mundane can turn into something wonderful, that is... if we don't let fear, time etc get in the way. I know my heart would have been full of regret if I had not done this simple favor.
